13-Day Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar: Route Comparison, Logistics, Migration & Cost Logic

Overview

One 13-Day Safari in Tanzania is the ideal period for the classic „Bush & Beach“ combination. You typically spend 6 to 7 days on a private safari in the Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) and conclude the trip with a relaxing beach vacation in Zanzibar. The choice of route significantly determines the pace: a relaxed round through the Central Serengeti or a logistically more demanding tour to the far north for the Great Migration.

Key Takeaways

  • Bush & Beach Standard 13 days are usually split into about 1 week of safari and 1 week of Zanzibar.
  • North Serengeti (Migration) costs time: The drive to the Mara River requires long transfer days, but offers the chance for river crossings (July-Oct).
  • Central Serengeti brings peace: Those who stay in the middle have significantly shorter distances and more time for relaxed game drives.
  • Logistics failure The transfer from Safari to Zanzibar is usually by small plane (Arusha/Serengeti → Zanzibar).
  • Baggage limit: On domestic flights, it often applies 15-20 kg in soft rice bags Hard-shell suitcases are problematic in Cessnas.
  • Ngorongoro Crater: In both versions, the „finale“ of the safari is before departure.
  • Stone Town: Included in Tour 2, to combine culture with the beach; Tour 1 focuses on pure relaxation.

Realistic Driving Times & Trade-offs

Anyone who wants to see „everything“ in 13 days will inevitably spend time on the road. Here are guidelines (pure travel time without game drives/breaks):

  • Arusha to Tarangire: approx. 2-3 hours (asphalt).
  • Tarangire → Central Serengeti: Approx. 4-5 hours (bumpy, incl. Ngorongoro transit).
  • Central Serengeti → North Serengeti (Tour 2): Approx. 4-6 hours (pure game drive/transfer, very dusty).
  • North Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater (Tour 2): Approx. 5-7 hours (very long travel day!).
  • Flight Arusha/JRO → Zanzibar: approx. 1-1.5 hours (most efficient option).

Which animals will you see in 13 days? (Expectations & Chances)

Big Five – Realism Check

In 6-7 days of safari (the safari portion of the 13-day trip), the chances of Elephants, buffaloes, and lions at nearly 100 %.

  • Leopards: Very possible in Central Serengeti (Seronera) and Tarangire, but depends on luck.
  • Rhinoceros Best (and often only) chance in Ngorongoro Crater. Since both tours include the crater, the chance is there, but never guaranteed.

The Great Animal Migration

  • July to October: The herds can mainly be spotted in the north.
  • January to March: The herds are in the south of the Serengeti/Ndutu (calving season).

April/May & November/December The herds are migrating (Central/West/East).

Best travel time for a 13-day safari (dry season vs. rainy season)

Dry Season (June to October) – The Favorite

  • Safari Vegetation is sparse, animals gather at waterholes (Tarangire) and rivers. Best visibility.
  • Zanzibar: Dry, not too hot weather. Ideal for a beach vacation.
  • Disadvantage Parks are full, prices higher (high season).

Green Season (November to March) – The Insider Tip

  • Safari Landscape is emerald green, many young animals (from Jan/Feb). Less dust.
  • Zanzibar: November/December can have short showers („little rainy season“), Jan/Feb is very hot and dry.
  • Advantage Fewer tourists, often a more relaxed atmosphere in the lodges.

Long rainy season (April & May)

  • Limited recommendation for beach holidays (many hotels on Zanzibar are closing or renovating). Safaris are possible (very green, empty), but logistically challenging.

Costs & Pricing: What drives the price of a 13‑day safari?

Even without concrete numbers, logic helps with comparison:

  1. Duration of safari portion: Each day in the Jeep (with guide & park fees) is significantly more expensive than a day at the beach resort. 7 days of safari + 6 days of beach is more expensive than 3 days of safari + 10 days of beach.
  2. North Serengeti: The long drive costs more fuel; furthermore, the camps at the Mara River are often more expensive in season due to their exclusivity.
  3. Domestic flights The flight from the mainland to Zanzibar is a fixed cost per person.
  4. Accommodation Zanzibar: The spread is extreme – from a simple B&B in Jambiani to a 5-star all-inclusive resort.

Here's how to compare offers correctly:

  • Is the Flight to Zanzibar Included in the price?
  • How many real safari days are included (not just arrival/departure)?
  • Which Food on Zanzibar Breakfast vs. Half Board vs. All-Inclusive

Accommodations in 13 days: Camping, Lodge, Tented Camp

For Safari Week, we usually recommend a mix. On Zanzibar, resorts/hotels are dominant.

Accommodation type (Safari)

Comfort

Atmosphere

Who is it suitable for

Tented Camp

Mid to Luxury

„Out of Africa“ feeling, canvas walls, often in the middle of nature

For those seeking the authentic bush sound (our recommendation for Serengeti).

Lodge

High

Solid walls, pool, paved paths, often larger

For those who prefer solid walls and classic hotel infrastructure.

Camping Tent

Simple

Very close to nature, sleeping bag/mattress, some shared sanitary facilities

Budget travelers and adventurers.

Important: In Zanzibar, we offer more small, charming boutique hotels in Jambiani, while in Stone Town, historic city hotels characterize the atmosphere.

Starting Points & Logistics: Arusha, Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), Zanzibar

  • Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO): The best arrival airport for international flights. Transfer to Arusha approx. 1 hour.

  • Return flight The 13-day trip ends in Zanzibar. Book your international return flight as an „open-jaw“ ticket (Outbound: JRO, Inbound: ZNZ) or arrange a short domestic flight back to JRO/Dar es Salaam.

FAQ - 13-Day Tanzania Safari

No, with a combination of approximately 6-7 days of safari and then relaxation in Zanzibar, this is a very balanced pace.

Tanzania (including Zanzibar) is a malaria area. Consultation with a tropical medicine specialist is strongly recommended. On Zanzibar, the wind often blows along the coast, which reduces mosquitoes, but protection is still necessary.

Yes, that is logistically possible. You would then fly from Zanzibar to Arusha/JRO, do the safari, and fly back. However, this requires additional domestic flights.

This depends heavily on your meals. There are many local restaurants in Jambiani. Budget for lunch/drinks and excursions (e.g., Blue Lagoon, Spice Tour) if you have not booked all-inclusive.

When flying with small Cessnas (bush planes), soft bags are a must. Excess baggage or hard-shell suitcases can sometimes be stored for a fee in the baggage depot in Arusha or sent on (expensively) via courier. We recommend traveling directly with soft duffel bags.
