Day Trip Safari Tanzania: Route Comparison, Travel Times, Feasibility & Cost Logic
Overview
A day trip safari in Tanzania makes it possible to experience the fascination of the African wilderness in a short time – ideal as a supplement to a Kilimanjaro climb or a business trip. Whether it's the world-famous „Big Five“ in the Ngorongoro Crater, huge elephant herds in Tarangire, or a walking safari in Arusha National Park: Even a single day offers unforgettable impressions, but requires realistic planning of travel times.
Key Takeaways
- Feasibility One day is enough for a Park. Park-hopping (e.g., Tarangire + Ngorongoro) is not logistically feasible in one day.
- The starting point is crucial: From Arusha, all northern parks are easily accessible. From Moshi, the journey (e.g. to the Ngorongoro Crater) is significantly longer.
- Big Five Chances: At the highest point in the Ngorongoro Crater.
- Active Options: Only in Arusha National Park is a walking safari possible on a day trip.
- Close Encounters The Serval Wildlife Sanctuary offers animal interaction, but it is not a wilderness safari.
- Cost factor Day trips have relatively high fixed costs, as parking fees and vehicle costs are incurred in full.
- From Zanzibar Only possible by flight (fly-in); travel by ferry/car is impossible for a day trip.

Day trip safari routes from Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam

Logistics for fly-in day trips:

From Zanzibar/Dar: Early morning flight (approx. 6:00/7:00 AM) to the destination airstrip.
Goal: Either Arusha (for the above tours 1-4) or Mikumi/Selous (South).
Return flight Late afternoon (around 4:00/5:00 PM).
Note: These tours are more expensive due to flights, but they offer maximum time savings.
Important: For the tours 1-7 listed above, the starting point is Arusha or Moshi. If you are on Zanzibar, you will need to book an additional domestic flight to JRO or Arusha to take these tours.

Which day trip best suits you objectively? (Comparison)
The „Big Five“ Dream (Ngorongoro)
Advantages: Iconic experience, rhinoceros encounter, extremely high animal density in a small space.
Disadvantages Longest travel time (especially from Moshi), high park fees, often many other vehicles in the crater.
For whom: Everyone who only has one day and wants to see the absolute highlight („bucket list“).
2) The „Real Wilderness“ Experience (Tarangire)
Advantages: Often more scenic (baobabs), huge elephant herds, calmer than the crater.
Disadvantages Less chance of rhinos, cats are harder to find than in the crater.
For whom: Nature lovers who love elephants and want to avoid crowds.
3) Active & Close (Arusha NP)
Advantages: Shortest journey, walking safari, very diverse (forest, lakes, mountain).
Disadvantages No guarantee of lions or cheetahs, no „classic“ savanna feeling like in the Serengeti.
For whom: Families with children, hiking enthusiasts, and anyone who doesn't want to spend hours in the car.
Realistic Driving Times & Trade-offs
On a day trip, time is your most valuable asset. Here are honest guidelines for transfers (one-way, no stops):
- Arusha City → Arusha NP: approx. 45-60 min. (very relaxed)
- Arusha City → Tarangire Gate approx. 2-2.5 hours (easily doable)
- Arusha City → Ngorongoro Gate approx. 3 hrs. (+ approx. 1 hr. drive into the crater) = Lots of driving!
- Moshi to Arusha Additionally, plan for approximately 1.5-2 hours of transfer time.
What do you gain – what do you lose?
- You win: A safari highlight without hotel changes and major luggage logistics.
- You lose: The „golden hour“ (sunrise/sunset) in the park, as you usually have to leave beforehand. The relaxed atmosphere by the campfire is lost.

Which animals do you see in a day? (Expectations & Chances)
Big Five - Where are the real chances in one day?
- Ngorongoro: The only day tour with a realistic chance of seeing all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhinoceros).
- Tarangire & Manyara: Very high guarantee for elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes. Lions are common, leopards are a matter of luck. Rhinos are practically non-existent here.
- Mkomazi Specifically for rhinos (in the sanctuary), but otherwise less animal density than in the crater.
Seasonal features
- Migration The Great Wildebeest Migration is almost never reachable on a day trip from Arusha (as it is usually deep within the Serengeti).
- Birds: Lake Manyara and Arusha NP are paradises for ornithologists (flamingos!).
Best time to travel for a day trip (dry season vs. rainy season)
Dry season (June – October)
- Advantage Vegetation is sparse, animals gather at the water (perfect for Tarangire).
- Disadvantage Dusty tracks, Tarangire and craters can be crowded.
Green Season (November - May)
- Advantage Landscapes are emerald green, clear visibility (less dust), many young animals.
- Disadvantage In the main rainy season (April/May), some paths can be muddy; grass is high (animals harder to see).
Photography tip
Since you are often in the park during bright midday on day trips, a polarizing filter is helpful against harsh contrasts.
Costs & Prices: What Drives the Price of a Day Trip?
Even without giving concrete numbers, the cost logic helps with comparison:
- Parking Fees These are calculated per person per day. The Ngorongoro Crater has an extremely high additional vehicle fee (Crater Service Fee).
- Fixed Costs Jeep & Guide: These costs are a flat rate per day, regardless of whether you drive for 1 hour or 10 hours.
- Number of people: Since it is a private tour, the price per person drops drastically if you travel in pairs, threes, or fours, as the jeep costs are shared.
Here's how you can compare offers:
- Is lunch (picnic) included?
- Is the crater fee included in the final price?
- Is this really a private Jeep, or are you booking an additional service?

Accommodations: Where will you stay before/after the tour?
Since these are day tours, you will need a base accommodation in the city. Should you spontaneously decide to extend your stay (from 1 day to 2), the following categories apply:
Accommodation type | Comfort & Atmosphere | Location Logic (for extension) | Who is it suitable for |
City Hotel (Standard) | Standard to luxury, civilization | Arusha or Moshi. Start/End point of the day tour. | All day-trip guests. |
Lodge (Safari) | Comfort, solid building, pool | Often at the edge of the park. Ideal when your day trip turns into two days. | Couples, comfort-seekers. |
Tented Camp | Canvas tents, „bush feeling,“ sounds | Closer to nature. Authentic upgrade. | Adventurers with a sense of style. |
Camping | Simple, sleeping bag, public toilet | Cheapest option for renewal. | Budget travelers. |
Starting Points & Logistics: Arusha, Moshi, JRO
Start in Arusha
The ideal hub. Save precious sleeping time in the morning and get to the parks faster.
Begin in Moshi
Ideal for tours to Chemka, Mkomazi, and Serval. For Ngorongoro or Manyara, you'll need to get up early as you'll be driving to Arusha first.
Start at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO)
Possible if you land in the morning and want to start right away, luggage can be taken in the Jeep.
Inclusive / Exclusive (typical) - transparent at a glance

FAQ - Day Safari Tour in Tanzania
Is it worth it for just one day on safari?
Yes, absolutely. Especially if you are in Arusha for business or want to see some wilderness after Kilimanjaro. Tarangire or Ngorongoro offer world-class sightings in just a few hours.
Can you visit the Serengeti in one day?
By car: No (too far). By plane (fly-in): Yes, but it is very expensive and you will only have a few hours on the ground. We recommend Tarangire or Ngorongoro as better 1-day alternatives.
When will I be picked up in the morning?
Depending on the tour and location, usually between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM. For the Ngorongoro Crater, we recommend a 6:00 AM departure from Arusha.
What do I need to bring?
Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, camera and some cash for tips/souvenirs.
Are day trips suitable for children?
Yes, especially private tours. We can take breaks anytime. The tours in Arusha NP and to Serval Wildlife are particularly child-friendly due to the shorter travel times and interaction.
Is the lunch warm?
No, day tours include a standard „lunchbox“ (picnic) that you can enjoy at a scenic spot in the park.
Can I see the migration in one day?
Probably not. The migration is mostly in the Serengeti. However, Tarangire has its own „mini-migration“ of elephants and zebras during the dry season.
Can I be picked up from the hotel in Zanzibar?
We are organizing the transfer to Zanzibar Airport, the flight, and the safari. However, you will have to leave the hotel very early (around 5:00 AM).
Are there restrooms in the parks?
Yes, there are restroom facilities at the gates and at designated picnic spots. Your guide will know all the stops.
Is tipping mandatory?
It is customary in Tanzania and an important part of income, but it is voluntary. As a guideline, approximately 20-30 USD per jeep/guide is considered for a day trip if satisfied.
