There are two airports near Arusha, offering different travel options. Arusha Airport is a domestic airport with only a few daily flights, located 15 minutes from the city center and is often the starting point for safaris. Kilimanjaro International Airport receives daily flights from domestic, African, and international airlines.
Kilimanjaro Airport is about a 45-minute drive from the city center, and a taxi to the airport costs around $50 USD. The best way to get from Arusha to Kilimanjaro Airport without a car is by taxi, which takes 51 minutes and costs $17-21 USD. Shuttle services are also available and cost around $55 USD for a 57-minute ride.
6.2. Accommodations in Arusha: Hotels, Lodges, and Guesthouses for Every Budget
Arusha offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every budget, from inexpensive guesthouses to luxurious lodges. There are four main ways to get around in both urban and rural areas of Arusha. Dala-dalas are the most popular and cheapest form of transport - minibuses that offer transport from surrounding suburbs and villages into town. These cost 400 TSH per person and run along main routes.
Bajaj (Tuk-Tuks) are Tanzania's version of the three-wheeled motor rickshaw and offer an affordable and more reliable mode of transport. Boda Bodas (motorcycle taxis) are found everywhere but are likely not the safest option. Taxis are more expensive but probably the safest way to get around, though they can be problematic during rush hour. A ride across town, from the Clock Tower to Makao Mapya bus station, should not cost more than 5,000 TSH.
6.4. Visa and Entry Requirements for Tanzania
A passport is generally required for entry into Tanzania, which must be valid for six months beyond the trip. German citizens require a visa for entry. The visa can be applied for online or obtained upon arrival at official border crossings and at the international airports of Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro upon payment of a fee of 50 USD.
When applying in Germany, the following documents are required: Passport (valid for six months), completed application form, photograph, and confirmed return flight booking. The application should be submitted at least three weeks before departure. An e-visa can be applied for online 2-3 weeks before entry, with the application to be submitted no later than 6 weeks before the start of the trip.
6.5. Health & Vaccinations: Traveling Safely in Tanzania
For travel to Tanzania, vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, pertussis, measles, and hepatitis A is generally recommended. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if entering from a yellow fever area or transiting for over 12 hours. Direct entry from Europe does not require a yellow fever vaccination.
Tanzania has a high risk of malaria year-round throughout the mainland below 1800m, including cities and the islands of Zanzibar and Mafia.
