Kankari Lodge
Cottages with fireplaces on the edge of Karatu
On the outskirts of Karatu, in the Ngorongoro Highlands, Kankari Lodge sits right on the safari route. From here it’s just as far to Lake Manyara National Park as it is to the gate of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The place is small: four luxury tents and eight double rooms spread across four cottages in a well-kept garden, all with their own bathroom and private veranda. The rooms have a fireplace, and the spacious tents have a seating area with a sofa. Meals are served in the cosy bar with dining room and pool views, and in the evening you sit around the fire pits outside under the starry sky. And if you have a day to spare: Karatu has markets and brickworks, you can go hiking in the nearby Ngorongoro forest, and on guided tours the coffee farms show you how the bean becomes your breakfast coffee.
