Crater Rim Hike
The highlands around the Ngorongoro Crater are made up of several extinct volcanoes with pronounced crater rims; besides the Ngorongoro Crater itself, these include the less visited Empakaai and Olmoti craters.
Crater Rim Hike at a glance
On the Crater Rim Hike you walk along the heights of the Ngorongoro Highlands, which consist of several extinct volcanoes: besides the famous crater, the quieter Empakaai and Olmoti craters also lie here. A ranger accompanies the hike. At Empakaai, for example, it takes around 45 minutes to walk down from the rim to the crater lake, where flamingos often stand in the water; on clear days the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano comes into view. Minimum age twelve, sturdy footwear essential, and the way back is uphill.
