Hiking at Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour at a glance
Materuni is a Chagga village on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro; from there a footpath leads through rainforest and fields to the Kuringe Waterfall, 70 to 80 metres high, 40 to 60 minutes each way. Along the way, coffee, banana and avocado plantations line the path, lunch is part of the excursion, and back in the village a Chagga family shows you how the coffee cherry becomes coffee: the beans are hulled, roasted over an open fire and ground in a wooden mortar, often to the sound of singing. Sturdy footwear is essential; the path can be slippery. A swim beneath the waterfall? Cold, but doable.
