Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour
Under the rule of the Omani sultanate in the 19th century, Zanzibar became one of the world's most important growing areas for cloves and still carries the byname “Spice Island” today.
Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour at a glance
Zanzibar was once called the Spice Island, and on the farms in the island's interior you can still smell why: cloves, cardamom, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon grow close together here. On the half-day tour you rub leaves, peel cinnamon bark from the trunk, guess scents and taste fruit in season. Nutmeg, by the way, reveals a red and black pattern inside that hardly anyone expects. If you want to buy spices afterwards, you can do so right at the farm; nobody has to.
