Five days, four destinations, one arc: first the elephants of Tarangire, then the forest by Lake Manyara, after that two days in the Serengeti and, to round it off, the Ngorongoro Crater. If you want the complete classic northern circuit without rushing, this is the route for you.
Four nights are spread along the way, and their number stays the same in every variant. The trip starts and ends in Arusha City; either end can be swapped for a Zanzibar flight.
Day 1
Day 1: Tarangire National Park
From Arusha City you head south-west into Tarangire National Park. The river at its centre keeps everything going: where there's water, there are elephants, along with buffalo, ostriches and zebras, and where so many animals drink, a lion is waiting somewhere too. In between, the baobabs raise their thick trunks skywards. After your first day of game drives you settle into your accommodation.
Day 2
Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park
Day two is devoted to Lake Manyara National Park, which packs an astonishing amount into a small area: forest, lakeshore, hot springs and an escarpment as a backdrop. On the game drive you'll come across giraffes and buffalo, and pelicans lined up by the water. And perhaps the park's most famous resident, a lion dozing in a tree. Then it's on to your second night.
Days 3–4
Day 3: Serengeti National Park
On the third day the route moves on to the Serengeti, around four and a half hours' drive from Manyara. The journey itself is part of the experience: it climbs over the Ngorongoro Highlands and then drops down to a plain that stretches to the horizon. The first herds appear along the way. In the afternoon there's time for a first drive around Seronera, and you spend the night in the park.
Day 4: Serengeti National Park, second day
A full Serengeti day without a single metre of transfer. Depending on the month you travel, the Great Migration is in a different place: from December to March the wildebeest gather in the south, from April they head north, and from July onwards many graze by the Mara in the north. Your guide plans the game drives accordingly, as far as the central Serengeti allows. One thing is certain: among lions, hyenas and giraffes, it won't get boring.
Day 5
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater
For the finale the route drops down into the Ngorongoro Crater. If there are still gaps on your wildlife list, this is your last and often best chance: all of the Big Five are possible on the crater floor, and when it comes to the black rhino, the crater has the edge over everywhere else in the north. After the game drive and a picnic you climb back out; by evening you're in Arusha City or sitting on the plane to Zanzibar.
