Three big names in four days: it starts in Tarangire National Park, two days in the Serengeti follow, and finally the vehicle descends into the Ngorongoro Crater. There are three nights along the way, and you travel privately.
The route starts and ends in Arusha City; Zanzibar can be added by flight at either end. This route reaches the Serengeti overland, so you already see quite a bit along the way.
Day 1
Day 1: Tarangire National Park
The safari begins with heavyweights: after about two hours' drive from Arusha City you're in Tarangire National Park, whose elephants gather at the river in their hundreds during the dry season. In between, baobabs, tall grass and giraffes against the light, plus ostriches strutting across the plain. You spend the evening at your first place to stay, your mind probably still in the park.
Days 2–3
Day 2: Serengeti National Park
Today you cover some ground, and it's worth it: the drive from Tarangire to the central Serengeti takes a good five hours, up into the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and back down onto the plains. The further you go, the emptier the map and the fuller the grassland: first the odd gazelle, then herds of zebra, finally the first lion tracks. In the late afternoon you reach your accommodation in the heart of the park.
Day 3: Serengeti National Park, second day
A whole day for the endless plains, and that's exactly what the name Serengeti means in the Maasai language. Your chances of seeing cats are best in the morning: leopards rest in the trees along the rivers, cheetahs prefer open ground. The difference, in case you're wondering: rosettes rather than spots on the coat, and the leopard is considerably heavier. In the afternoon comes the second game drive, in the evening the third night.
Day 4
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater
The final day begins with a climb: from the Serengeti you head up to the crater rim, where the air feels noticeably cooler, and then down a steep track into the crater. Down below, safari runs on fast-forward: buffalo, wildebeest, lions and hyenas share the crater floor, and your chances of a black rhino are better here than anywhere else in the north. In the afternoon you climb back out and drive to Arusha City, with a connecting flight to Zanzibar if you wish.
