Fly in, safari out: you fly into the central Serengeti, spend two days there and return overland, with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. That turns the journey back into a third safari day.
The trip starts in Arusha City; from Zanzibar you usually take a direct flight into the Serengeti. The trip ends in Arusha City, and if you want to go on to the island, you take off once more from there: the flight to Zanzibar takes a good 80 minutes.
Days 1–2
Day 1: Flight into Serengeti National Park
From the aircraft window the Serengeti looks like a painting, and from the open 4x4 very much alive: after landing near Seronera, the first game drive begins straight away. The central Serengeti is busy all year round, with animals, that is: lions, elephants, giraffes and, depending on the season, the columns of the Great Migration. You spend the night in the park.
Day 2: Serengeti National Park
The second day belongs entirely to the plains. You set off before the sun is high, out to the rivers where leopards like to rest in the trees. At midday there is a picnic, and in the afternoon comes the second round, ideally where the tracks were fresh that morning. In between there is time simply to switch off the engine and listen.
Day 3
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
The third day starts before sunrise, because it has two stages: first the 135 kilometres from Seronera to the crater rim, about three and a half hours, then the game drive in the crater itself. Down below, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas and lions live in close quarters, and with a little luck a black rhino appears. In the afternoon the 4x4 climbs out of the crater and takes you to Arusha City; from there you fly on to the island of Zanzibar.
