Three days, three parks, three very different landscapes: first Arusha National Park at the foot of Mount Meru, then the elephant territory of Tarangire, and finally Lake Manyara beneath the wall of the Rift Valley escarpment. The stages are short, the time on game drives is long.
The trip starts and ends in Arusha City, with two overnight stays in between. Zanzibar can be added by plane, before the safari, after it or both.
Day 1
Day 1: Arusha National Park
The shortest drive of the whole route: after about half an hour you are in Arusha National Park, above which rises Mount Meru, at 4,566 metres Tanzania's second-highest mountain. The park is small but varied: buffalo and hippos at the Momella Lakes, giraffes in the clearings, colobus monkeys in the montane forest. And because large predators are rare here, you are allowed to walk part of the way, accompanied by a ranger. Then it is on to your first night's accommodation.
Day 2
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
Day two takes you to Tarangire National Park, which is named after a river. In the dry season it remains the most reliable source of water far and wide, and that is when the elephants march to its banks in family groups. Among the baobabs you also see why patience pays off on safari: wait by the swamps and, with luck, you will spot a leopard or a pride of lions. After the afternoon game drive, your second overnight stay awaits.
Day 3
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
The final day belongs to Lake Manyara National Park, a narrow strip between the lake and an escarpment about 400 metres high. The soda lake takes up most of the park's area; depending on the water level, flamingos wade in the shallows. In between, baboons, elephants and, with luck, a lion up in the branches. One day is plenty for this park, so the circle closes in Arusha City in the evening, or you are on the plane to Zanzibar.
