Step 1 of 4: Where does your trip start and end?
This route leaves nothing out: it begins in Arusha National Park, visits Tarangire and Lake Manyara, takes two full days for the Serengeti and ends in the Ngorongoro Crater. Five protected areas in six days, and every evening a bed with a story to go with it.
Whether you start in Arusha City or fly in from Zanzibar is up to you; the same goes for the end. It's always five nights.

Day 1
Arusha National Park
Day 1: Arusha National Park
The circuit starts at a gentle pace: half an hour's drive and you're in Arusha National Park, where giraffes stand between mountain forest and clearings and hippos doze in the Momella Lakes. If you like, you can switch to a canoe and watch the buffalo from the water. Mount Meru towers over it all. A first day to settle in; in the evening your first place to stay awaits.
Day 2
Tarangire National Park
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
Day two belongs to Tarangire National Park. Your chances by the river are best in the morning, when the elephants come to drink; at midday your guide stops for a picnic, and in the afternoon a detour to the swamps, where the predators lie in wait, is well worth it. It goes without saying that zebras, wildebeest and ostriches keep wandering into the picture along the way. Night number two follows in the evening.
Day 3
Lake Manyara National Park
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
Day three, a change of scene: Lake Manyara National Park nestles directly beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, and that is exactly what makes it special. Down below, forest, floodplain and lakeshore alternate; baboons, giraffes and hippos live next door to one another. You might even catch one of the famous tree-climbing lions. After that: night three.
Days 4–5
Serengeti National Park
Day 4: Serengeti National Park
Now the Serengeti calls. Around four and a half hours' drive separate Manyara from the heart of the park; the road climbs into the cool Ngorongoro Highlands and down into the grasslands. With every kilometre the horizons widen, until at some point only the plain remains. In the evening you arrive at your accommodation inside the park, and the sounds of the savannah take over.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park, second day
A full day in Serengeti National Park, and what a day: well over a million wildebeest live in this ecosystem, plus zebras and gazelles in their hundreds of thousands, all moving together in a great arc over the course of the year. The calendar tells you where they are at the moment; your guide knows where the drive is worth it. Between two game drives there's time for a long picnic lunch.
Day 6
Ngorongoro Crater
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
The finale belongs to the Ngorongoro Crater: up to the rim early, then down to the crater floor, where game drives are allowed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. A few hours here bring more animals than a whole day elsewhere: buffalo, wildebeest, lions and, with luck, the rhino. In the afternoon you head out and back to Arusha City; Zanzibar is then reached by flight.
