If the Serengeti is the main reason you're coming, you get it here at full length: three of the five travel days belong to the park. The whole trip is framed by Tarangire National Park at the start and the Ngorongoro Crater at the end.
Four nights, starting and ending in Arusha City, with a Zanzibar flight before or after if you wish. You reach the Serengeti overland; the drive there is a travel day of its own, and by the end of it you're already on a game drive.
Day 1
Day 1: Tarangire National Park
First up is Tarangire National Park, two hours' drive south-west of Arusha City. Besides the famous elephant herds, ostriches, buffalo and zebras live here, and by the swamps in the south even pythons climb the trees. The afternoon is given over to a long game drive, then comes the first of four nights.
Days 2–4
Day 2: Serengeti National Park
Between Tarangire and the Serengeti lie a good five hours of driving, and they pass more quickly than you'd think: the road climbs into the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maasai drive their herds across the slopes, then the plain opens up. Towards the afternoon the vehicle rolls through the grasslands of the central Serengeti, with the first game drive already happening along the way. You spend the night in the heart of the park.
Day 3: Serengeti National Park, second day
Now the Serengeti has time to show what it's got, and that's a lot: depending on the estimate, 2,000 to more than 4,000 lions live here, plus leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. The morning game drive sets off before the heat arrives, lunch is a picnic in the shade, and in the afternoon you head out to the rivers. There, hippos stand crammed together in the water and do: very little. Fascinating all the same.
Day 4: Serengeti National Park, third day
Today can be more relaxed, or especially early: before sunrise the balloon flight sets off over the waking savannah; it is booked and paid for separately. If you'd rather stay in the vehicle, follow the previous day's tracks once more or scan the kopjes, where lions like to keep a lookout. The evening belongs to your last night in the park.
Day 5
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater
This route saves its finale for the way back: from the highlands the track drops down into the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is at its liveliest in the morning: the hyenas are still on the move, the lions not yet taking their midday nap, and with a bit of luck a black rhino is standing in the grass. After the picnic you climb back out, and towards evening the vehicle rolls into Arusha City; the island is reached by flight.
