A whole week for northern Tanzania: four national parks, then the Ngorongoro Crater, and in the middle of it all three full days in the Serengeti. You could hardly fit more into seven days, and yet there's still room to breathe.
There are six nights along the way. You set the framework yourself: Arusha City or Zanzibar, at the start as well as at the end; travel to and from the island is by air.
Day 1
Day 1: Arusha National Park
You start in Arusha National Park, home to no fewer than four species of monkey: first and foremost the black-and-white colobus monkeys, swinging through the canopy of the mountain forest. Add to that the Momella Lakes, buffalo, giraffes and the view of Mount Meru. A walk with a ranger is possible; hurrying, on the other hand, isn't necessary: six more days lie ahead of you.
Day 2
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
On to Tarangire National Park. In the dry season its river draws everything that's thirsty, and that's a long list: elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, ostriches. The viewing right from the vehicle is packed accordingly. Incidentally, in the rainy season the animals spread out further across the park, and then your guide's experience counts double. The day ends with sunset at your second place to stay.
Day 3
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
Day three is at Lake Manyara, a park that makes birdwatchers especially happy: more than 400 species are on its list, from pelicans to flamingos, which, depending on the water level, stand in their thousands on the soda lake. In between, troops of baboons in the groundwater forest and elephants in the shade. In the afternoon the vehicle heads off to your third night.
Days 4–6
Day 4: Serengeti National Park
From here on, the wide open spaces take over: the drive to the central Serengeti takes about four and a half hours from Manyara and climbs steeply at first before rolling out onto the plains. The afternoon belongs to the first game drive in new territory, and the days ahead belong entirely to the Serengeti.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park, second day
Day five begins while the grass is still wet: a morning game drive to the rivers, where hippos lie in groups in the water and leopards use the trees as box seats. Later the vehicle heads out onto the open plains, cheetah territory. At midday you take a break under a tree, later comes the second round, and in the evening there are stories around the dinner table.
Day 6: Serengeti National Park, third day
The Serengeti once more, this time without a set programme: watch the sunrise over the plains, pay the kopjes a visit or simply wait where the lions lay yesterday. Safari rewards patience, and day six is reserved for exactly that. To finish, the sun drops below the horizon as if it had rehearsed it.
Day 7
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater
For the grand finale the road climbs one last time: above, the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater; below, the crater itself, whose floor measures a good 260 square kilometres. Down here you can complete the week's wildlife list, above all with the black rhino. After the last game drive and the climb back out, the journey ends in Arusha City in the evening; if you wish, one more plane takes off for Zanzibar.
