This route turns the safari week around: instead of spending days working your way towards the Serengeti, you fly straight in on the very first morning. For three days the most famous park is your home, then the vehicle rolls back at a leisurely pace: Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and, to wind down, Arusha National Park.
Every variant begins with the flight into the Serengeti, from Arusha City or, as a rule, directly from Zanzibar. The way back is overland to Arusha City; for the island, one more flight takes you there at the end. Six nights in every case.
Days 1–3
Day 1: Serengeti National Park
Bags into the light aircraft, and off you go: the flight takes you straight to the central Serengeti, and with luck you'll spot the first herds from the window. On the ground the vehicle is waiting, and your first game drive begins where other routes only arrive after several days. You spend the night in the heart of the park.
Day 2: Serengeti National Park, second day
Full focus on the savannah: day two takes you deep into the grasslands, to prides of lions, elephant families and, with patience, a leopard in the branches. The lunch break is a picnic in the open air, then the search goes on until the light turns golden. In the evening you sort through your photos; there should be quite a few.
Day 3: Serengeti National Park, third day
There are two ways to approach day three: classic game drives once more, morning and afternoon. Or get up before dawn and float over the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon, silent except for the burner; this extra is booked and paid for separately. Either way, the day ends with your last night in the park.
Day 4
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater
Now the return journey begins, and it packs a punch: from Seronera it's three and a half hours to the Ngorongoro Crater, followed by a game drive on the crater floor. Among the buffalo and wildebeest, you sometimes even manage the rarest sighting of the Big Five here: the black rhino. After climbing out of the crater, you head to the evening's accommodation.
Day 5
Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park
From the highlands down to Lake Manyara: this stage is short, only 56 kilometres from the crater, about an hour. That leaves almost the whole day for the park, with its tree-climbing lions, the Hippo Pool and the flocks of birds on the soda lake. In the evening your fifth night awaits.
Day 6
Day 6: Tarangire National Park
The penultimate day turns the usual order around: Tarangire National Park comes not as the opener but as the last dance among the big parks. Its elephants make things easy: in the dry season they stand close to the river, and the baobabs provide the photo backdrop as a bonus. After the afternoon game drive comes the last night of the trip.
Day 7
Day 7: Arusha National Park
Things turn green to finish: Arusha National Park lies on the way back and less than an hour's drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport; a last safari day could hardly be more conveniently placed. Between the mountain forest and the Momella Lakes you'll see giraffes, buffalo and colobus monkeys, on a guided walk too, if you like. Afterwards the journey ends in Arusha City, or you fly across to Zanzibar.
