Step 1 of 4: Where does your trip start and end?
Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater: this route strings together three classics of the north, one each day. The drives stay short, and at the end comes the game drive in the crater, with a chance of all of the Big Five.
The starting point is Arusha City, with two overnight stays along the way. Zanzibar can be added at the start or the end, by plane in each case.

Day 1
Tarangire National Park
Day 1: Tarangire National Park
You set off heading south-west: after about two hours' drive you reach Tarangire National Park. Its trademark is the baobabs, which look as if their roots were growing into the sky. Among them, elephants wherever you look, in the dry season mainly by the river that gives the park its name. In the late afternoon the first stage ends at your accommodation, and the night sounds like the bush.
Day 2
Lake Manyara National Park
Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park
Next stop is Lake Manyara. Hardly any park changes its scenery so quickly: one moment dense forest full of baboons, the next open shoreline where zebras and wildebeest graze, with the shimmering soda lake beyond. A good 400 metres above you, the park's world ends at the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment. After a full day of game drives you head to your second overnight stay.
Day 3
Ngorongoro Crater
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
For the finale it is an early start: the road climbs to the crater rim, which lies higher than many an Alpine pass, at over 2,200 metres. After the first view from above comes the drive down into the crater. Its roughly 260 square kilometres are home to more animals than you could count in a morning: lions, buffalo, elephants, plus the chance of a black rhino. In the afternoon you head back to Arusha City, or fly on to Zanzibar.
